Introduction
The NewSpace Africa Conference, held in Abidjan from April 25th to 28th, 2023, was an enriching experience for me. During this exciting event, I had the opportunity to participate in stimulating discussions on the role of academia in the African space program. In this article, I will share my experience and highlight the importance of academic engagement in the development of the space sector in Africa.
The Context of the NewSpace Africa Conference
The NewSpace Africa Conference is an annual event that brings together experts, researchers, industry professionals, and space enthusiasts from the African space sector. This conference aims to promote collaboration, innovation, and growth in Africa's space industry. With a particular focus on academia's involvement, the conference explores the role of higher education institutions and researchers in the development of African space programs.
As a moderator during the conference, I had the responsibility to facilitate discussions, ask relevant questions, and encourage idea exchange between panelists and the audience. My main goal was to maintain constructive dialogue and ensure that all participants could contribute to the discussion.
The Role of Academia in the African Space Program:
One of the central themes of the conference was the crucial role played by academia in the development of the African space program. Higher education institutions aredrivers of innovation, research, and talent development in the space domain. Through specialized educational programs, applied research, and international partnerships, African universities can contribute to the growth and competitiveness of the space sector.
During the discussion sessions, we addressed topics such as the establishment of space engineering training programs, applied research in the space domain, and collaborations between African universities and international space agencies. We also discussed challenges faced by academic institutions, such as funding and establishing strong links with the industry.
